Are you looking for better ways to engage your community, reach into new neighborhoods, and diversify your outreach? Arts organizations are defining a greater civic role by fostering citizen participation in their communities and engaging audiences in more meaningful ways. This session explores a successful example of bringing people together: UW-Whitewater’s experience with The Big Read of the National Endowment of the Arts. This case study illustrates the positive impact of collaborating with diverse arts, education, literacy, and museum partners to forge a successful community literacy initiative. Learn how fostering community participation can attract more patrons, increase sponsorship, and garner media attention.

Barbara Schaffer Bacon

Barbara Schaffer Bacon co-directs Animating Democracy at Americans for the Arts. Publications include Civic Dialogue, Arts & Culture: Findings from Animating Democracy; the Arts and Civic Engagement Tool Kit, and The Cultural Planning Work Kit. Barbara directed the Arts Extension Service from 1984–1990. She is a board member of the Fund for Women Artists and New WORLD Theater, and president of the Arts Extension Institute, Inc. Barbara served 14 years on her local school committee.

Ben Strand
Young Auditorium

Ben Strand is the Development Director for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Young Auditorium, a 1,300 seat performing arts center. For more than ten years, Ben has worked at diverse nonprofit organizations with an emphasis on building partnerships across organizations in the arts, education and the environment. Ben received his M.F.A. from Goddard College and B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
